Dr Karen H Simpson

 

Dr Karen H Simpson graduated from Leeds University School of Medicine in 1979 and qualified Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB).  She entered anaesthesia in 1980 and specialised in Pain Medicine.  She did research School of Pharmacy in Bradford University in 1981.   She gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) in 1983. She gained her Certificate of Specialist Training (CCT) in Anaesthesia in 1986. She was Lecturer in Anaesthesia at Leeds University for 3 years; this was an academic and clinical post.

In 1987, she was appointed as a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine in at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Since then, as well as working within a large multi-professional Pain Management Service,  she has maintained an interest in Palliative Medicine. She is an Honorary Consultant at St Gemma’s Hospice Leeds.  She is actively involved in clinical work, teaching and research. Her work has been solely in Pain Medicine since 2006. 

She was a founder member of the Leeds Pallium Research Group and was an FRCA examiner for 12 years. She has been an active member of the British Pain Society and was Secretary of the Society (2002-2004).  She was Regional Adviser in Pain Medicine 2003-2007. In 2007 she was admitted as a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine Royal College of Anaesthetists (FFPMRCA). She is involved in the work of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists having been the first Vice Dean. She was appointed to the Court of Examiners for the FFPMRCA in 2010.
